For the third year running MJA Business Solutions will be supporting a Coffs Coast business owner with the Business Excellence Sponsorship (BES).
As specialists in business, MJA offers business coaching, financial advice and accounting all under one roof. They have packaged up these services into a great 12-month program for one lucky business owner.
“It’s difficult for business owners to keep building their business when they are tied up in fighting the day to day fires,” said Mel Zander, founder of MJA Business Solutions. “We’ve developed this award so we can help a deserving business owners to expand their horizons. It’s good for the whole community for Coffs businesses to thrive.”
Past winners all sing the praises of the Business Excellence program, which includes 12 hours of one-on-one business coaching, quarterly financial reviews and entry into the Sunnys Business Awards.
The Business Excellence Sponsorship has proven successful in breeding Sunnys winners, with Jasmin Adams, founder of fromZION and Krystie Boyes from Champ Cleaning both collecting gongs after successfully completing the 2015 program.
Perhaps more important than awards, the program has helped business owners to develop their business skills, gain confidence and dream bigger.
“I now have a system for things and I know exactly what I’m doing and where I’m up to,” explains Mindy Bell, owner of @Mindys Hair Salon and 2016 BES winner.
The time spent developing systems with her coach has given Mindy the confidence to expand. “We’ve recently moved into the shop next door. I would never have had the confidence to move forward with the expansion if I hadn’t really got a handle on the money side of things and put strong systems in place”.
The BES program is not restricted to small or start up businesses and has successfully helped even “old hands” in the quest for business excellence. Craig Budden, franchisee for Aussie Home Loans in Coffs Harbour, had been in the game for a long time before winning the 2016 BES.
He discovered that the accountability of having a coach helped him to stay focused on the big picture. “It’s so easy to think, ‘this is my business and I can do what I want.’ But the reality is the opposite. I was all ‘head down, bum up’ and wasn’t focusing on where I wanted the business to go.”
This year Craig will be entering the Small Business Excellence category of the Sunnys Business Awards, and feels confident that a year spent with his eye firmly on the big picture gives him a good chance in this category.
“We get so excited when one of our graduates is recognised at the Sunnys,” says Mel Zander. “It’s incredibly rewarding to feel you have played a part in someone’s business success.”
Mel says that it’s particularly rewarding to work with a business with a strong social vision. This was the case when MJA took on The Australian Centre for Eating Disorders, a local company that is working to improve the treatment of people with eating disorders throughout Australia and New Zealand.
Two local women started the business: Kyla Holley and Allison Davidson. But perhaps three heads can prove better than two, because both women claim that it was the fresh pair of eyes their coach brought to their business that helped the most.
“Our coach acted as an impartial third person when it came to making joint decisions,” said Holley. “That fresh perspective has helped us to consider every angle when making big decisions and also to compromise when we didn’t exactly agree.”
This year the program has changed from a calendar year to financial year, so the BES will commence in July 2017 for the lucky winner. The award is open to any business owner on the Coffs Coast. You do not need to be a client of MJA Business Solutions.
