At the time of the recent floods the Commissioner asked tax officers to reduce the burden on people in the affected areas by not sending correspondence such as activity statements and by extending the due dates for lodging activity statements.
We understood that tax affairs were not a priority for people in disaster declared areas of North Queensland and Northern New South Wales.
Since then, the flood waters have receded in some of these areas and the Tax Office has begun receiving requests for refunds and information. So we’re resuming our correspondence with people in some flood affected areas, including sending out refunds. However, if you do receive correspondence for affected clients and it is inappropriate to deal with it at this time, please call us on 13 72 86 Fast key code 5. Please also use 13 72 86 Fast key code 5 if you need to talk to us about anything to assist you or your clients affected by the natural disasters deal with tax issues.
